SIXTH FORM

curriculum

The educational vision of Avanti House Sixth Form is one where deeply inspired teachers nurture joyful pupils and nourish their innate passion for learning. Learning is a quest to discover each pupil’s unique gifts and potential to lay the foundation for a lifelong journey of discovery.

Students in the Sixth Form are able to really focus in on the subjects they love and have the opportunity to study their chosen subjects in depth. Through high quality learning and teaching in the classroom, and supportive structures outside the classroom, students in our Sixth Form will be given the opportunity to flourish and make the next steps in their educational journeys.

WORKING INDEPENDENTLY

In lessons, teachers will expect students to take responsibility for their studies. They will guide students through the fundamentals of the course, and will set work to consolidate the knowledge gained and develop their understanding of it. Pre-reading is provided and students also have access to a range of online platforms including Up Learn.

The ability to work independently in the Sixth Form is a vital skill in preparation for the type of study and work which will be undertaken at university and later in a career. We therefore expect the necessary commitment from Sixth Form students to invest time and effort into their academic work, demonstrating a sustained approach and intellectual curiosity. Students are supported through timetabled, and staffed, directed study time where they can work independently and also collaborate with peers.

SUPER EXTRA CURRICULAR ENRICHMENT PROGRAMME

In addition to A Level subjects, students are given many additional opportunities to enrich their studies.

All students have the opportunity to study an Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) which teaches them the skills and knowledge needed to devise a question, conduct research and present the findings through either a 5,000 word essay or an artifact. The EPQ is a highly respected qualification and Universities can give lower offers to those students studying an EPQ due to its success in preparing students for the academic rigour of Higher Education.

All students studying a science based A Level have the opportunity to compete in Olympiads. These are fantastic chance to test yourself against the best A Level scientists across the country and our students at Avanti House have a strong track record of success. There are also competitions in Maths with our A Level Mathematicians competing in the UK Maths Challenges.

SUBJECT COMBINATIONS

Many leading universities, including Oxford and Cambridge, are becoming increasingly prescriptive concerning the subject combinations which they prefer applicants to pursue at A Level. Therefore, if considering an application for a popular course at a competitive university, students should research and seek advice from our Careers staff to ensure that they have an appropriate profile. This should obviously be considered carefully when making any decision about whether a fourth A Level subject is appropriate.

In the Sixth Form, additional classes which are designed to take students beyond the requirements of the A Level curriculum are delivered by many departments, and there is a targeted preparation Oxbridge Elite Programme which is delivered from the start of Year 12. This programme provides additional opportunities and support for those applying to Oxbridge or Russell Group universities, in preparation for university entrance exams and interviews.
